BUILDING A BETTER SAFETY PROGRAM
Health and Safety Training

The most valuable tool in the Safety Plan is the education and training component. Responsibilities for
training must be clearly defined, especially for employees operating as Supervisors.

The Safety Training Program should encompass the details of what is to be covered in the New
Employee Orientation Program and who has responsibility to provide new employee training. The
Safety Plan should also specify what type of follow-up training is to be conducted, and who has
responsibility for ensuring the follow-up training is conducted. [OSHA may require annual updates to
employee training or special certifications for some job tasks. The Safety Plan should cover, in detail,
any special training, qualification and certification requirements].

All employee training should be documented and the safety plan should detail the requirements along
these lines. There are seven basic steps to employee training (see
Employee Training Guideline link).
