No. 7   TAKING ON RESPONSIBILTIES
Some things to know before you give the talk:
Everyone in the company has a responsibility. Safety is a shared responsibility. It is not the responsibility of one single individual, like a safety
manager, but in reality it is a responsibility of every single employee. Whether you work for a small shop, or a large corporation, everyone is
expected to do 4 things:

1) Show up to work, ready to work
2) Show up on time
3) Do the job to the best of your abilities given the tools, training and support avaialble
4) Do the work safely
Employees have these responsibilities when it comes to making sure the work or the job is performed in a safe manner. There are not
optional responsibilities.

1) Know how to safely perform each job task.
2) Perform the job task in a safe manner at all times.

Most accidents occur due to:

  • Inattention
  • Being in a Hurry
  • Improper training
  • Not Using the right tool
  • Failing to maintain equipment in a safe manner
  • Not following standardized safe work rules
  • Bad Attitudes
What do you think is the most common cause of accidents in our work place and why do you think this is the most common cause?
Where are the two top things you think we do the most that could cause an accident? What are the safe things we can do to
eliminate the risk of an accident for each job task?
Work can't be done without people, and people are not always perfect when dealing with other people.  Supervisors bear specific responsibilities to
help prevent accidents in the workplace Nothing can take the place of good supervision. Making sure things are done in a safe manner is a requirement of
supervision, even if you think a supervisor doesn't care. Supervisors do care about your safety, even if  they don't seem to always portraying a "caring
and friendly" demeanor.
We all know them well - some supervisors don't seem to display a people-oriented attitude. Regardless, we all bear a
responsibility to insure the work is accomplished and in as  safe a manner as possible.

Supervisors, by the nature of their job task, have to ask employees to do things, from time to time, that may be unpleasant. Supervisors, because of some
jobs, requires things to be accomplished within specified time periods, adding to the stress of the task to be accomplished. This may sometimes cause
conflict and stress between workers and supervision. Please don't take it personally. In as much as possible, every effort will be made to make things
enjoyable
as possible, not matter how unpleasant the task or quickly the task may have to be accomplished.

Supervisors fall into their role for a couple of reasons, and sometimes it is not because of people skills. Supervisors are tasked to get things done within a
specific time frame. Sometimes, an individual may be made a supervisor by default- no one else wants to do the job. Regardless, safety can not and must
not be sacrificed to get the job done.
Questions to ask to get employees talking:
If we have a safety issue and it doesn't seem to matter to anyone, what should you do?
What should an employee do if there is a safety concern and a supervisor doesn't seem to care?
Name five things a supervisor is responsible to accomplish (not necessarily in order of importance)
